LABUHA – Waste is an issue that requires collective action. To solve this once and for all, stakeholder synergy is needed. Palm oil firm PT Gelora Mandiri Membangun (GMM) ensures its participation and support of optimal, sustainable waste management and processing efforts in Labuha City (South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province) by donating a garbage collection motorcycle.

This move promotes state environmental movement “Clean Indonesia 2025”, which aims to reduce and manage nationally-generated waste by 30% and 70% respectively, as per Presidential Regulation 97/2017. PT GMM expects to help the local government create a healthier, cleaner, and a more comfortable place to live for its people.

“PT Gelora Mandiri Membangun, a South Halmahera-based oil palm plantation company, is committed to maintaining environmental hygiene by supporting Labuha’s Smart City program with this donation, which may be used to collect refuse at any place in Labuha where bigger garbage vehicles cannot physically enter,” said PT GMM’s manager Lim Sehoon at the donation handover ceremony, Tuesday (1/30), at PT GMM’s branch office in Bacan Subdistrict.

The motorcycle was handed over directly to South Halmahera Environmental Service head Samsu Abubakar on behalf of the Labuha government. Management hopes it can help the city and its surrounding areas manage trash and develop natural environments.

Labuha lies on the southern beach of Bacan Island and is the capital city of South Halmahera. Its geographical conditions present challenges to development (both human and infrastructure) as well as waste handling.

This is especially when marine and land waste management are interconnected. 80% of ocean litter comes from land (while the rest is from human activities at sea).

Proper waste handling is in line with PT GMM’s commitment to the Environmental pillar of its CSC (Corporate Social Contribution) program. “We will always protect the natural environment and simultaneously tackle its issues, such as waste,” Lim ended his speech. (PR)
